Met Office Issues 'Be Aware' Warnings

The Met Office has issued yellow 'be aware' warnings across the UK, with gales of up to 70 mph expected along the western coast later today.

Snow has already caused major disruptions the country, with schools forced to close and transport systems suspended.

A statement released on the Met Office website stated: "Nearly all parts of the UK are expected to see strong winds from Wednesday afternoon and through Thursday as an Atlantic low pressure system moves across the country.

"Gusts of 50-65 mph are possible fairly widely, with gusts of up to 75 mph possible around exposed southern and western coasts, as well as high ground. Although winds across England and Wales will slowly ease through the day on Thursday, the morning will see a spell of very strong winds across parts of Northern Ireland and western Scotland with isolated gusts of up to 80 mph possible in exposed areas."

Frank Saunders, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, said: "The volatile weather we've seen this week is set to continue in the next few days - with strong winds for many and heavy rain in places. This could lead to difficult driving conditions, transport disruption and potentially some localised flooding issues."
