Crocked Campbell out of England team

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson was left with a defensive headache today ahead of Wednesday night's friendly against Croatia at Portman Road.

Central defensive duo Sol Campbell and Jonathan Woodgate both suffered knocks in their respective Premier League fixtures at the weekend leaving Eriksson with the pairing of Chelsea's John Terry alongside Rio Ferdinand at centre half.

Joining Campbell and Woodgate on the treatment table is Bayern Munich's Owen Hargreaves, however no replacements are to be drafted as backup.

Fortunately for the Swede, captain David Beckham has shrugged off a back injury to start his first game for his country since making a summer move from Manchester United to Real Madrid.

Eriksson also confirmed that David James would start as England's No1 goalkeeper, but would be replaced at half time by either Liverpool's Chris Kirkland or Leeds' Paul Robinson.

Meanwhile, Wales can look forward to Wednesday's crucial Euro 2004 qualifier away to Serbia & Montenegro with an in-form Ryan Giggs at their disposal.

Mark Hughes' team need only a draw to make sure of a play-off place for next year's championships in Portugal.

However, a win will set them up nicely for next month's trip to Italy, a team they have already beaten 2-1 in Cardiff.

Qualification is a near certainty at present with the Welsh two points ahead of Italy in Group 9 and with a game in hand over their nearest rivals.

Striker John Hartson and defender Andy Melville are the two main men missing from the Belgrade game, however Nathan Blake and Robert Page will act as replacements.

In Oslo, Scotland manager Berti Vogts has named his strongest possible team for their friendly against Norway, ahead of their forthcoming Euro qualifiers against the Faroe Islands and Germany.

Barry Ferguson will again captain the side despite the continuing furore over his future at Glasgow Rangers and a possible move to Blackburn.

Ahead of all those games, the Republic of Ireland face Australia in Dublin on Tuesday night.

Brian Kerr will have a full team at his disposal bar Everton's Lee Carsley and Blackburn's Steven Reid. His only other change will see Nick Colgan replacing Shay Given in goal, thus giving the young Stockport County keeper some valuable international experience.
