Actor Anne Kirkbride Dies Aged 60

Actor Anne Kirkbride, best known as Deirdre Barlow, has died aged 60.

ITV confirmed that Ms Kirkbride died peacefully in a Manchester hospital after a short illness.

The actor joined Coronation Street in 1972, playing the character of Deirdre for 42 years.

Cast members of the soap shared messages of the shock and sadness on Twitter, with Kate Ford, who played her on screen daughter Tracy, saying: "Heartbroken at the loss of my friend and beautiful on screen mummy. The most crazy, funny 100 per cent human. My life was enriched by her."

Colin Firth - King Of The Golden Globes
British actor Colin Firth was the 'King' of the Golden Globes last night after he won the Best Actor in a Drama award for his role in The King's Speech. The 50-year-old actor won the award for his role as King George VI in the film, but although The King's Speech was nominated in seven categories, it failed to win any other awards.

Lily Allen Suffers Miscarriage
Pop singer Lily Allen has suffered a miscarriage, it has been confirmed. The 22-year-old announced that she was expecting her first child with boyfriend, Ed Simons, 37, from dance duo the Chemical Brothers in December. At the time, her spokesperson said that the pregnancy was in a very early stage and asked for the singer's privacy to be respected.

Best memorial service held in Manchester
A memorial to football legend George Best has been held at Manchester Cathedral. Family and friends of the Manchester United and Northern Ireland player were joined by a whole host of footballing stars and celebrities to pay tribute to the star who died in November.

Andrew MacKay, a former Tory MP has been told to apologise after it came to light he made a "serious misjudgement" regarding his parliamentary expenses claims. Mr MacKay and his wife Julie Kirkbride, also an ex-MP, both claimed money on their respective second homes.

Two MPs Stand Down Over Expenses Row
Julie Kirkbride and Margaret Moran have announced they will both stand down as MPs at the next election over the ongoing expenses row. The Bromsgrove Tory MP Mrs Kirkbride followed her husband, Andrew MacKay, in announcing her departure from parliament.
