Alternative energy schemes share in £1.26m fund
Projects in Scotland and Wales to heat homes using alternative fuel sources are to share £1.26million government cash under a scheme designed to cut energy bills, combat greenhouse gases and tackle fuel poverty.
Shetland's Hjaltland Housing Association (£429,446) and the Llandwddyn Community Biomass Scheme in Powys (£47,459) are among four new grants under the government's £50million Community Energy programme, which helps to fund energy-saving schemes to heat homes, hospitals, schools and other public buildings.
The Hjaltland scheme uses energy from waste to heat 125 new houses in the Shetland Islands' biggest housing development for 30 years. The Llandwddyn project's woodchip biomass boiler uses locally sourced wood to heat a school and community centre as well as houses.
Other grants announced today are £746,642 to University College London, which supersedes a £140,000 scheme successful in the previous bidding round, and £42,009 to Angus Community Care Charitable Trust. The four schemes combined will cost almost £4million and cut carbon emissions by over 1,000 tonnes a year.
Lord Whitty, Minister for Sustainable Energy, said: "I am particularly pleased that two of the projects use alternative fuels. These are environmentally sustainable energy schemes that make the most of natural resources to cut pollution and contribute to a better quality of life.
"I have seen for myself the very real benefits that the programme brings to people in many communities, including the elderly and schoolchildren, and its benefits to the environment through cost-effective energy savings."

EDF To Takeover British Energy
The Government welcomed EDF's proposed £12.5 billion takeover offer for British Energy Group and the British Energy Board's recommendation of the offer to its shareholders. The Government has committed to accept the cash offer of 774p per share for its 36% stake held by the Nuclear Liabilities Fund (NLF), subject to certain conditions.

Party Leaders Clash Over HSBC Allegations
David Cameron has been described as a "dodgy prime minister surrounded by dodgy donors", by Labour leader Ed Miliband. The party leaders have clashed in the Commons over party donations. Mr Miliband criticised the Conservatives over political donors who held Swiss bank accounts with HSBC.

Crime reduced by neighbourhood warden schemes
The government's neighbourhood warden scheme has been hailed as a success after pilot areas recorded a fall in overall crime rates of more than a quarter. The Neighbourhood Wardens Evaluation Report, published by an independent agency, examined progress in 84 areas and found that there was a 28% drop in crime.
