Police to keep close eye on hardcore football hooligans
Up to 400 hardcore football hooligans are to placed under police surveillance in an effort to crackdown on soccer violence across England, it was announced today.
The Home Office has earmarked £5 million for the creation of specialist police teams which will gather evidence on ringleaders that will either lead to criminal convictions or succeed in getting offenders banned from club grounds.
The FA welcomed the news, saying that the initiative comes at a very important time, as the "stakes have never been higher for English football" in the run-up to Euro 2004.
Paul Barber, the FA's Director of Marketing and Communications, said: "This is excellent news. The FA has been working closely with the Home Office, the police and NCIS over a long period of time to identify the hooligans who are intent on wrecking the game for the majority of decent fans."

Four Arrested In Fraudulent RFC Sale Investigation
Police investigating the alleged fraudulent sale of Rangers Football Club in 2011 have arrested four men. Officers from Police Scotland, Surrey Police, Cheshire Police and Thames Valley Police, carried out a joint operation that saw four addresses across the UK raided at the same time.

Best released on police bail
Former Manchester United and Northern Ireland football star George Best has been released on police bail following questioning over an alleged assault. Mr Best, who apparently walked voluntarily into Staines police station in Surrey, denies striking 34-year-old Vicky Pope who is an acquaintance of his former lover Gina Devivo.

Police Lose High Court Pay Battle
Police officers have lost their High Court battle for a 2.5% pay rise to be paid in full. Home Secretary Jacqui Smith refused to implement their pay award in full, which has led to bitterness among the ranks. The Police Federation said that Ms Smith has acted unlawfully.

British Man Dies In Dubai Police Custody
A British man has died in police custody in Dubai. Lee Bradley Brown, 39, from east London, died on Tuesday after he was taken to a Dubai police station where he was allegedly assaulted and put into a cell. It has been reported that Mr Brown, was arrested over a row at the luxury hotel Burj Al Arab hotel.
