At least 50 killed in Bombay bombings

Update: At least 50 people have been killed and around 120 wounded in two car bomb explosions, according to reports emerging today from the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay).

It was originally believed that four bombs had exploded in the city this morning, but indian police later confirmed that two car bombs both apparently placed in taxis had exploded in the city.

The first bomb detonated close to a congested bullion market near to the Mumbadevi Hindu temple in Bombay's commercial centre. Minutes later a second car bomb exploded in southern Bombay at the Gateway of India arch, an area popular with Western tourists.

Most of the casualties occurred in the first bomb which detonated in a crowded area. Reuters news agency reported a horrific scene as a taxi driver had described how "legs and hands" had ended up on top of and inside his taxi following the blast.

No one has yet admitted responsibility for the car bomb attacks.

Earlier this year 14 people died in bomb attacks on Bombay. Authorities have blamed bombings on the Pakistan-based Islamic militant group Lashkar-e-Toiba.
