Rebels launch two devastating attacks in Baghdad
Two attacks in Baghdad have claimed the lives of at least 20 people, including up to six policemen.
In the first incident, 13 civilians were reported to have died and around 20 were injured after a car bomb exploded outside a Shia mosque in the northern neighbourhood of Adhamiya. A suicide bomber was reported to have detonated the device as worshippers left the mosque after morning prayers.
Shortly after, near the road to Baghdad International Airport rebel gunmen stormed a police station in Amil and freed some of the prisoners being held there. The onslaught which happened at 06.00am local time is thought to be one of the fiercest directed against security bases. Residents reported that the gunmen surrounded the station and fired mortar rounds before storming the courtyard and attacking the base. This is the latest in a series of attacks against Iraq's police and security services by anti-government rebels.
Since the onset of the campaign to destabilise the interim government, insurgents have stepped up attacks on both US troops and Iraqi police and security services. The road leading to Baghdad International Airport is now considered one of the most dangerous roads in Iraq and has seen numerous attacks on US troops and Iraqi government forces.
Yesterday, the US Embassy ordered employees to avoid using the road.

Series of bomb attacks hit central Baghdad
US military sources have confirmed that four car bombs in the Iraqi capital Baghdad this morning have killed at least 26 people. The attacks occurred in quick succession and involved the Australian embassy, eastern Iraqi police headquarters, the international airport and an Iraqi military complex.

Security chief killed in latest outbreak of Iraq violence
A senior advisor for the Iraqi government has been killed as violence continues to erupt in the capital of Baghdad. Wael al-Rubaei, director of operations at the National Security Ministry, was ambushed by gunmen and shot dead as he was driven to work. His driver was also killed.

34 killed in Baghdad suicide bombings
Up to 34 people have been reported killed in four separate attacks by rebels in Baghdad today – the first day of the holy month of Ramadan. Suicide bombers targeted the headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and three police stations as Baghdad was rocked by a wave of explosions this morning.

Hundreds killed as US troops battle with Iraqi militants
More than 35 US soldiers and 450 Iraqis are thought to have been killed in country-wide clashes between rebel militias and Coalition forces since the weekend, according to reports emerging from Iraq today. Around 300 Iraqis are thought to have been killed in Fallujah where US forces have been attempting to regain control of the city.

Straw welcomes signing of Iraqi interim constitution
The Foreign Secretary has welcomed the official signing of the interim constitutional document by the Iraqi governing council. The signing ceremony took place in the capital Baghdad today and is the template for governance after the official handover of power from the US-led administration to the governing council in July.
