Footballer Banned From Driving After Crash

Everton footballer Darron Gibson has received a driving ban after hitting a cyclist while drink driving and then fleeing the scene.

The 27-year-old Republic of Ireland player pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol, driving without due care and failing to stop after an accident.

He was handed a 20-month driving ban and a 12-month community order, along with an unpaid work requirement of 200 hours.

He was also ordered to pay £4,500 of compensation for the damaged bicycle and £1,000 to the injured rider Philip Quinn, along with £100 each to two other cyclists involved in the accident.

Beverley Sister Dies At 91

Joy Beverley, part of the singing trio the Beverley Sisters, has died at the age of 91.

The singer was the eldest sister in the group, who were known for their songs such as I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus and Little Drummer Boy.

They had their own BBC TV show in the 1950's and were made MBE's in 2006.

Joy was previously married to Wolverhampton Wanderers' start Billy Wright until his death in 2004.

Man Taken To Hospital After 50ft Fall From Cliff

A man has been rescued after falling 50ft from a cliff in Scotland.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:58am this morning Tuesday, 1 September at Old Bridge of Tilt Road, Blair Atholl.

The man had been walking in the area when he fell from the cliff edge into the water below.

Specialist fire crews, a Royal Navy search and rescue helicopter, paramedics, a trauma team and police were all called to the scene.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) Incident Commander Bob Rearie said: "One of our water rescue teams worked on the Old Tilt side of the water and using their line rescue skills and equipment took Scottish Ambulance Service Paramedics down. Once they had reached the casualty he was assessed and placed on our rescue sled across the water to meet with our second water rescue team on the opposite side.

"The Royal Navy helicopter was also there to meet the casualty and he was airlifted to hospital for treatment to his injuries, which are, thankfully, not believed to be life threatening."

A Manchester police man has been praised for tackling an armed assailant who threatened to shoot his colleague. The officer responded to a call for assistance after a fellow police man, who had been called to a disturbance at a pub on Lytham Road in Flixton, was threatened with a gun yesterday afternoon.

An Albanian man has been accused of possessing a loaded weapon outside the London home of former prime minister Tony Blair. Kutjim Nurka, 56, was stopped in his car by officers patrolling Connaught Street on Monday night.

Body Recovered From Cumbrian River
A body has been recovered from a river in Cumbria following a search for a man missing in the water. At around 4.15pm on Tuesday, police were called to the River Esk at Longtown Bridge, near Carlisle, after receiving reports of a man in difficulties in the water. It is understood the man, aged 32, had just rescued a young girl from the river.

Runner Rescued After 100ft Mountain Fall
A man is being treated in hospital for multiple injuries after falling more than 100ft down a mountain in the Lake District. The man, said to be aged in his 40s, was running on Scafell Pike on Saturday when he fell.

Man Rescued From Burning Yacht
RNLI rescuers have saved a lone yachtsman from a burning boat off the North East coast. The RNLI reported that the 36ft vessel "burst into flames" at about 05:45 off Seaham, Co Durham, with boat crews in the area spotting thick plumes of smoke. They alerted the emergency services.
