Britons Stranded As UK-Sharm Flights Cancelled

Thousands of Britons have been left stranded in Egypt following the grounding of flights between the UK and Sharm el-Sheikh. The move comes days after a Russian jet crashed at the weekend, kiling all 224 people on board. Intelligence has since suggested that a bomb may have been the cause of the crash.

On Wednesday, the Foreign Office said all flights between the two destinations had been cancelled due to security fears. Some 20,000 Britons are thought to be in the resort.

A total of 19 flights were scheduled for Britain today, 5 November, but UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond confirmed in a statement that none of them would depart. He added that the Foreign Office was working to resume flights as soon as possible.

"Passengers who are on the ground in Sharm el Sheikh will be returned to the UK," he continued. "We are working with the airlines and the Egyptian authorities to put in place emergency procedures and additional screening and additional security to ensure they can get home safely either on their original scheduled return dates or if they wish to leave earlier on an earlier date."
