Illness dashes Burns's rally title hopes
Top British rally driver Richard Burns has been forced to retire from the World Rally Championship (WRC) with a mystery illness.
Burns, 32, was taken to Newport hospital on Sunday evening when he became ill. He spent the night under observation and was expected to undergo further tests today.
The driver was in contention for this year's WRC title, just five points adrift of the co-leaders Sebastien Loeb and Carlos Sainz, and four behind Petter Solberg, in the championship leader table.
Without a win this year, Burns nevertheless showed consistent early and mid-season form to finished in the top three positions except in his last two WRC events, and was in theory in with a chance of taking the 2003 title.
In a statement Richard Burns co-driver Robert Reid said that his teammate had been told not to drive and was bitterly disappointed about being unable to compete in the Wales Rally GB event.
The Peugeot Sport team confirmed that Richard Burns had been hospitalised and that due to the seriousness of the driver's condition, on medical advice he was not authorised to take part in the gruelling Wales Rally of Great Britain scheduled to take place this weekend.
Peugeot has appealed to the sport's ruling body the FIA to be allowed to replace the Richard Burns and Robert Reid crew with the Freddy Loix and Sven Smeets for the recce of the event stages which is taking place today.
The Wales Rally GB, the last event in this year's WRC calendar, begins on Wednesday and ends this Sunday.

Teen charged over fatal house fire
A 17-year-old boy has been charged with the murder of two sisters who died in a fire at their home in Tyneside last month. The 17-year-old, who cannot be named, is due to appear before South Tyneside magistrates court on Wednesday, charged with the murder of Tatum Spence, 14, and her 12-year-old sister Demi-Jade.

British girl dies in fire show tragedy
A six-year-old British girl has died after suffering burns when a fire-breathing show at a Turkish hotel went wrong. Eden Galvani, who is believed to be from Ilford, east London, was watching the show with her mother at the Gemini Resort in Didim on Saturday.
