First autumn storm expected
The first storm of autumn will hit northern and western parts of Britain on Thursday night and Friday morning Met Office forecasters warned today.
The intense depression will blow in from the Atlantic on Thursday night bringing high winds and heavy rain, with parts of Northern Ireland, Scotland, northern England and Wales most at risk. Winds in these areas are likely to exceed 70 mph.
Keith Groves, Head of Forecasting at the Met Office, said: "Until now autumn has been relatively quiet in terms of Atlantic storms.
"However, this one will remind us what autumn can bring and the winds we expect in the north and west may well bring down trees and cause some minor structural damage."

Britain braces itself for severe gales
A "vigorous autumn storm" has been forecast to arrive in the UK on Saturday, bringing severe gales to many parts of Britain, the Met Office has warned. The storm is expected to develop over the eastern Atlantic during Friday and the areas most likely to be affected are Wales, the Midlands and northern and eastern counties of England.

A new national curriculum is to be introduced in state schools in England, the government have announced, saying that the changes will help the school system "catch up" with the world's best. While the Prime Minister called the changes a "revolution in education", the move has received a mix response from others.

Gales predicted in UK
The UK is bracing itself for some strong winds and heavy rain throughout Tuesday and into Wednesday. The Met Office said that a deep area of low pressure would bring unseasonably strong winds and heavy rain to northern parts of the UK, especially north-west Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The Liberal Democrats have been urged to adopt a policy of “fairer taxes; not higher taxes”. During a keynote speech at the party’s autumn conference in Blackpool, Treasury spokesperson Vince Cable, said that the Liberal Democrats had to dissociate itself from its image as a ‘high tax and big spending party’.
