Lockerbie bomber to serve at least 27 years

Abdelbaset ali Mohmet al Megrahi, the Libyan secret service agent who was found guilty of the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 above Lockerbie in 1988, has been told that he must serve at least 27 years in prison.

Al Megrahi was convicted in January 2001 of the bombing in which 270 people died – 11 of whom were killed on the ground when wreckage plummeted to earth.

Today the High Court in Glasgow told al Megrahi that he must serve a minimum of 27 years, which will be backdated to when he was first taken in custody in 1999.

Al Megrahi was originally convicted and sentenced in 2001 to serve life in prison, but a change in human rights law saw him returned to court to receive minimum sentencing.

The 51-year-old has always maintained his innocence. An appeal against his conviction was rejected in March last year.
