van Hoogstraten released after winning appeal
Nicholas van Hoogstraten, the millionaire businessman who was jailed for the manslaughter of a business associate, has been freed by the Court of Appeal today.
Mr van Hoogstraten had his manslaughter conviction quashed at the Court of Appeal in July and a retrial ordered. The Court of Appeal agreed today that the case against the property tycoon did not stand up, and he was released.
The 58-year-old was jailed for 10 years last year for allegedly paying two men who murdered business associate Mohammed Raja in July 1999.
At the Court of Appeal in July lawyers for Mr van Hoogstraten claimed that Mr Justice Newman had given "inadequate" advice to the jury at the original trial in October 2002.
With his name cleared, Mr van Hoogstraten may now seek legal action for wrongful imprisonment.
Robert Knapp, 55, of Co Limerick, and David Croke, 60, of Moulsecoomb, Brighton, are both serving life terms for the murder of Mr Raja.

Mr van Hoogstraten, 60, from Uckfield in Sussex had been seeking to enter an appeal in relation to the murder of rival businessman Mohammed Raja in 1999.

Pair Found Guilty Of Lee Rigby Murder
Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale have been found guilty of murdering soldier Lee Rigby. Fusilier Rigby was killed as he made his way back to Woolwich barracks in south-east London on 22 May. The soldier was struck by a car before being dragged into the road and attacked with knives and a meat cleaver.
