Two dead after French trawler sinks

Two people are known to have died following the sinking of a trawler off the coast of Cornwall this afternoon.

It is understood that five people were aboard the French-owned vessel when it ran into trouble 14 miles off the Cornish coast.

Two lifeboats and two helicopters were scrambled to attend the stricken trawler just after 12.40pm. Rescue teams discovered an empty life raft and recovered two bodies and airlifted them to shore.

Several vessels in the area have joined the search but have so far only encountered debris.

Coastguard have described sea conditions at the time of the SOS call as "dangerous".
