Briton killed in Baghdad hotel bombing

The Foreign Office have confirmed that a Briton is among those killed in the bomb blast that devastated a Baghdad hotel on Wednesday.

The victim was named as 30-year-old Scott Mounce from Hull. Mr Mounce had been working for an Italian telecommunications firm.

A second Briton named as 31-year-old Giles Nash, was hospitalised in the 1,000lb car bomb attack on the Mount Lebanon Hotel on Wednesday. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

US military officials have indicated that around 40 people were injured in the explosion and the news agencies are reporting that seven people are in a serious condition.

Speaking earlier today in an interview for BBC Radio, Foreign Office Parliamentary Under-Secretary, Bill Rammell described the bombing as "an appalling attack upon innocent civilians" and that the perpetrators cared nothing for the people of Iraq.

He said: "Overall I think the security situation is a continuing concern there are real difficulties but it’s only one part of the overall picture. For most Iraqis life is gradually improving and the major opinion poll earlier this week I think did demonstrate that overall there’s a sense of optimism amongst the Iraqis. They feel that their lives are getting better as a result of the departure of Saddam and there is strong support for the coalition."

It is almost a year since the Allied Coalition commenced military operations in Iraq.
