Severe gales across central England and Wales
Parts of England and Wales were braced today for severe gales set to sweep across the region on Friday.
Forecasters have warned of high winds, up to 70mph in exposed areas and possible heavy rainfall that may lead to localised flooding.
Wales and northwest England were among the first areas to bear the brunt of the high winds that will affect northern England, the Midlands later today.
This morning forecasters were warning of severe gales affecting northwest England, north east England, the Midlands, Wales, southwest England, east Anglia and Lincolnshire.
Some disruption to travel was expected and drivers were warned to take extra care.
Forecasters said on Friday that the rest of the weekend would be windy.

UK Business Confidence Up
City business professionals have recorded a rise in market confidence, which could signal an end to the UK recession. An index survey by the Institute of Chartered Accountants put business confidence for the end of June at 4.8. The rise, the largest in two years, becomes more potent when pitted against March's figure of -28.2.

As heavy rain continues across parts of the UK over 200 homes have been flooded and train services disrupted. Northern England is the most affected but around 70 area’s in England and Wales are being warned to expect flooding. The Met office has said that some places could see an average fortnight’s rainfall of 50mm (2in).

UK set to face spell of severe weather
Forecasters have issued a weather warning ahead of the arrival of severe gales and heavy rain to the western UK. The Met Office is forecasting that an intense depression to move near to the southwest of England on Wednesday, bringing very strong winds to southern and western parts and sweeping rain across the whole of the British Isles.
