Plot to detonate chemical bomb in Britain foiled: reports

An alleged plot to detonate a chemical bomb in a populous area of Britain has been foiled, the BBC had reported today.

According to the BBC Online, the plot was uncovered following a joint operation by US and British secret services.

It is alleged that a group sympathetic to Al Qaida had concocted a device from a mixture of explosives and a toxic chemical known as osmium tetroxide. The chemical is a powerful staining agent which can cause blindness if it comes into contact with the eyes. Exposure to the chemical in vapour form can also cause breathing problems; over-exposure to the agent can be fatal.

A device of this type would achieve maximum effect when detonated in a confined space, such as a shopping centre, Tube station or airport.

No further details are available at the moment.
