Investigation continues as armed officers shoot man dead

Investigations were continuing today following the killing of a 23-year old man by armed officers from the Metropolitan Police in the Thornton Heath area of south London.

According to police, a handgun was recovered at the scene of the shooting, which took place at around 11.25am on Wednesday in Raymead Passage, London Road in Thornton Heath.

It is understood that a 19-year-old man is helping police with their inquiries.

It was reported that two shots had been fired.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) have confirmed that they are conducting investigation of the shooting, which is mandatory procedure in such incidents.

In a statement the IPCC said that the Metropolitan Police Service had been carrying out a "pre-planned operation" to arrest the man who was wanted in connection with previous firearms offences.

IPCC Commissioner Mehmuda Main Pritchard, who is responsible for South East London and an IPCC Senior Investigator, were called to the scene of the shooting to assess the situation.

Any witnesses to the incident are asked to contact the Metropolitan Police Service on 020 8785 8168.

Today, forensic scenes of crimes officers were conducting a search of the alleyway where the incident took place. Yesterday, a gun was removed from the scene for forensic tests.
