Prince Charles should marry Camilla, says Lord Carey
The former leader of the Church of England has said that Prince Charles should marry his long-time consort, Camilla Parker-Bowles, in an interview with The Times newspaper published today.
The ex-Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Carey of Clifton, said that the Prince of Wales was "more sinned against than sinning", and should marry the woman "he has loved since a young man".
The Times, which is serialising the church leader's memoirs tomorrow, quotes Lord Carey as saying: "He is the heir to the throne and he loves her. The natural thing is that they should get married.”
There is a groundswell of support within the Church of England for the view Lord Carey expressed – that the future head of the church should be allowed to advance his current arrangement.
The Church recently changed its rules in order to allow remarriages of divorcees to take place within the institution – even if the parties' former partners are still alive.
Lord Carey told the The Times that he did not believe the issue of remarriage was a "no-go area" for the Church, and the Prince ought to consider his options.
The Prince's former deputy private secretary, Mark Bolland, told the newspaper that the time for the proposal to be pushed forward was "a year or so" after the death of the Queen Mother. While the media climate and public tolerance was ripe last year for such a suggestion, "it will no doubt return", the PR executive said.
