MOD issue revised peacekeeping guidelines

Enhanced practical guidance designed to improve the way Britain's Armed Forces conduct peace support operations has been launched today by the Ministry of Defence.

The guidance builds on the experience gained from recent operations and highlights emerging trends. It outlines a 'Comprehensive Approach' that engages and supports all the organisations needed for a successful operation such as government departments, non-governmental organisations, academia, business and the media - many of whom have contributed to the new publication.

Vice Chief of the Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshall Sir Anthony Bagnall said: "Britain leads the world in Peace Support thinking and this publication is an invaluable guide, not only to our own Armed Forces, but to all those engaged in delivering long term peace and stability around the world.

"This comprehensive approach has evolved through 50 years of Peace Support Operations from Malaya, the Arabian Peninsula and East Africa and our recent experiences in the Balkans and Sierra Leone."

The new publication, JWP 3-50 'The Military Contribution to Peace Support Operations', builds on the realities of recent operations, applies the lessons identified and acknowledges emerging trends.
