Drivers urged to take care during UK-wide freeze

With freezing overnight temperatures forecast for the whole of the UK over the next few days, the Highways Agency is urging drivers to take extra care on the roads.

The Met Office has said it expects the weather to turn colder today and freezing temperatures are likely to affect roads in all parts of the country over the next few days. Northern England, the Midlands, Lincolnshire & East Anglia may all experience snow falls during the cold snap.

The Highways Agency has said that its gritters are on standby ready to treat England's motorways and other strategic roads. Maintenance teams will be gritting in advance of the cold weather, and will continue to treat motorways and other strategic roads throughout the cold snap.

The agency is advising drivers to check for up-to-date information on weather and road conditions before they set off, and during their journey.

In the event of severe weather affecting the trunk road network the agency will be working with police forces and local authorities to ensure the impact is minimised.
