Straw begins two-day visit to Middle East
The Foreign Secretary is today on the first leg of a two-day visit to Israel and the Occupied Territories to explore how the UK can "contribute to efforts to bring peace" to the region. During his visit Jack Straw is expected to meet Israeli Prime Minister Sharon and with interim Palestinian President Rawhi Fattouh. He will also meet with the Israeli foreign secretary, Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia and PLO leader Mahmoud Abbas.
In a press conference with the Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom today, the Foreign Secretary explained that the basis for his visit was to state a recommitment to the two state solution, back the disengagement plan and support for the Palestinians as they elect a new President.
Mr Straw said he had taken part in "very constructive meetings today".
"I'm much encouraged by the very positive messages given to me about the positive approach the Israeli government will be taking to Palestinian elections on 9 January," he said.
"We look forward to working with the new Palestinian leadership. We've made clear we'll do everything we can to facilitate and support the withdrawal from Gaza and to support the Palestinians in that new situation and in respect of elections".
"We're strongly committed to the Road Map and its quickest possible implementation. We're looking to create the conditions in which it can be put into practice".
The Foreign Secretary is due to meet Palestinian leaders later today and tomorrow.
The UK is providing material support to preparations for the Palestinian elections through the EU – this includes 10 million euros of support to the Central Elections Commission.
The Foreign Secretary last visited Israel and the Occupied Territories in February 2002.

EU leaders are to assemble in Brussels on Wednesday to secure a last minute deal on the escalating crisis over the European banking crisis. A number of arguments have developed between state leaders, especially between French President Nicolas Sarkozy and David Cameron, on how to handle further EU bailouts for troubled euro-using countries.
