Sea King contract awarded to Westland Helicopters
The Ministry of Defence has awarded a £300 million contract to Westland Helicopters Ltd for the long term future support provided to Sea King aircraft.
The Sea King Integrated Operational Support (SKIOS) contract, awarded by the MOD's Defence Logistics Organisation (DLO), replaces around 60 individual contracts agreed with over 30 different suppliers, saving the MOD £50 million over the next ten years.
The announcement follows the signing last month of a a long-term partnering and business transformation arrangement between the MOD and Westland.
Under the contract, Westland Helicopters will assume responsibility for the provision of aircraft, transmission, mechanical and avionics support for the Sea King covering spares, repairs, publications and technical advice.
The technical support service will include a customer support service and the provision of on-site support teams at each Sea King main operating base.
Sea King helicopters are one of the "real workhorse" aircrafts of the UK's Armed Forces used for a variety of tasks often in harsh and difficult environments.

RAF Hercules Airlifts Premature Newborn Twins
Twins born prematurely have been airlifted by an RAF Hercules aircraft from the Outer Hebrides to a hospital on the Scottish mainland, in an emergency rescue operation. The mother of the babies went into labour at 27 weeks and gave birth in hospital in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis on Sunday.

Rescuer injured as helicopter strikes mountainside
A member of a civilian mountain rescue team is being treated for injuries received after he fell from a search and rescue helicopter that struck a mountainside in the Lake District. The man is reported to have sustained serious injuries when he fell some 40 feet from the Royal Navy Sea King helicopter.

River Search Continues For Missing 11-Year-Old
A major search operation is continuing for an 11-year-old boy who fell into the River Towy in Carmarthen. The operation was launched at about 16:00 on Tuesday when it was reported the boy had gone into the river.

Portsmouth Boosted In £17 Million Naval Contract
Portsmouth is getting a major fillip with news that a £17 million contract for a naval vessel has been granted. The project, to refurbish a Type 42 destroyer, the HMS York, has been awarded to Portsmouth-based Fleet Support Ltd (FSL), the Ministry of Defence has announced.
