Liberal Democrats announce reshuffle

Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy has announced the reshuffle of the party’s ‘shadow cabinet’.

The main changes are the appointment of Steve Webb as the party’s health spokesperson, while Ed Davey becomes education spokesperson.

Vincent Cable retains his post as treasury spokesperson, while Sir Menzies Campbell and Mark Oaten retain their positions as foreign affairs spokesperson and home affairs spokesperson, respectively.

Norman Lamb and Sarah Teather will also join the Liberal Democrats ‘shadow cabinet’ for the first time, taking the posts of trade and industry spokesperson and communities and local government spokesperson.

The post of transport spokesperson went to Tom Brake, while Andrew George becomes the party’s spokesperson for international development.

Other changes include the appointment of David Laws as work and pensions spokesperson, Mike Moore who becomes the party’s defence spokesperson, Norman Baker who takes the environment and rural affairs job and Simon Hughes who takes responsibility for areas covered by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.

Mr Kennedy said that he was “delighted” with the new appointments. He said: “Following our excellent General Election result on May 5, we have brought together a superb team of individuals, combining experience with youth. I am confident that we will continue to provide a real alternative to the Labour government as the new parliamentary session gets underway.”
