Three children released after questioning about attempted murder
Police have released three of the five children who were arrested after the suspected attempted murder of a five-year-old boy in West Yorkshire.
Two are still being questioned - a boy and a girl both understood to be 11-years-old – about the attack on Anthony Hinchliffe.
It is believed that five-year-old Anthony, from Chickenley, Dewsbury, may have been taken from his mother’s garden and led to a wooded area where he was attacked. Police said that he had suffered neck injuries and bruising to his body consistent with a ligature, but have refused to confirm reports that the child received his injuries during an attempt to hang him.
His cousin and another member of the public reportedly discovered Anthony behind Earlsheaton Medical Centre. He was described as being in a “distraught” state and was taken to Dewsbury District hospital where he was treated for his injuries. He was released yesterday afternoon.
Police said that Anthony was not related to any of the children who had been questioned. Detective Superintendent Andy Brennan, the senior investigating officer in the case, confirmed that Anthony had suffered a number of bruises to his body and a number of marks around his neck. He said that specially trained officers were interviewing the child in order to try and establish exactly what took place.
This morning, police said that up to three more people could be arrested in connection with the investigation.
Police also confirmed that a "number of items" were recovered from the scene of the attack.

Police continue to question girl over attack on boy
Police are continuing to question a 12-year-old girl about the attack on five-year-old Anthony Hinchliffe. Mary-Ann murder – fourth man remanded
A fourth man has been remanded in custody, charged with the murder of Reading teenager Mary–Ann Leneghan earlier this month. Twenty-three-year-old Llewellyn Olemide Adams also faces charges of kidnap and the attempted murder of Mary-Ann’s eighteen-year-old friend.

Gang 'boss' convicted of cockling deaths
A 29-year-old man has been found guilty of the manslaughter of 21 cockle pickers who drowned at Morecambe Bay. Lin Liang Ren, from Liverpool, had denied being the head of the cockle picking operation, which brought over illegal immigrants to collect cockles, and denied the manslaughter charges.

Rugby star arrested following fight
England rugby player Olly Barkley has been arrested by police using CS spray following a fight in which a man suffered a broken jaw. The 24-year-old fly half, who also plays for Bath, was arrested by Devon and Cornwall Police in Newquay on Sunday night. A 19-year-old student from Cardiff and a 23-year-old man from Wadebridge were also arrested.
