Imitation firearms targeted in Violent Crime Bill
Plans to restrict the sale of imitation firearms and knives and a clamp down on binge and underage drinking lead the way in the government’s Violent Crime Reduction Bill, published today.
The new Bill includes plans to ban the manufacture and sale of imitation firearms and tougher sentences for carrying imitation firearms. The age limit for purchasing a knife will be raised from 16 to 18; and people responsible for alcohol-related violence may be banned from specific areas for up to two years.
The proposals also include plans to introduce tougher manufacturing standards to ensure that imitation firearms cannot be converted to use real ammunition and make it an offence to use other people to hide or carry guns of knives.
The Bill would also give head-teachers and other members of school staff powers to search pupils for knives.
Proposed measures in the Bill will tackle alcohol-related violence including the introduction of Alcohol Disorder Zones. These would require licensed premises to contribute to the cost of alcohol-related disorder in areas where it is a problem.
Police would also be given extra power to impose a 48-hour ban on selling alcohol in any premises caught serving alcohol to under-18s, as well as ban individuals from a specific area for up to 48 hours for involvement in alcohol-related disorder.
Home Office Minister Hazel Blears said: “There is increasing public concern around relatively low level crime and anti-social behaviour escalating to more serious offences because people are under the influence of alcohol or carrying weapons. Outlawing the manufacture and sale of imitation firearms, clamping down on binge and underage drinking and ensuring knives are less accessible will help to tackle this.”
