Fresh appeal in PC Blakelock murder

A fresh appeal has been launched for information regarding the murder of PC Keith Blakelock twenty years ago.

PC Blakelock, 40, was murdered during riots at the Broadwater Farm estate in Tottenham, north London, on October 6, 1985.

Winston Silcott, Mark Braithwaite and Engin Raghip were convicted of the murder in 1987, but had their convictions cleared on appeal in 1991.

Previously unseen images of PC Blakelock’s bloodstained riot uniform, showing the number of wounds inflicted on him during the attack, have been released by police in an attempt to jog the memory of any witnesses to the murder.

Detective Superintendent John Sweeney said that the circumstances of some of those who witnessed the murder might have changed in the twenty years since the murder was committed and they may now be willing to come forward with information.

Mr Blakelock’s widow, Elizabeth Johnston, also appealed for anyone with any information about the murder to come forward. In a statement, she said that she wanted to bring an end to the “uncertainty” of not knowing what happened to her husband.
