Westminster tops road accident table
More people are killed or seriously injured on roads in Westminster than anywhere else in England, according to a new report.
The study, by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, found that for every 100,000 people in the London borough, 176 were killed or seriously injured in road accidents in 2003/4, while 1,114 people suffered slight injuries.
North Yorkshire ranked second in the CSP survey, with 147 deaths or serious injuries per 100,000, followed by Camden, Warwickshire and Lincolnshire.
South Tyneside was found to have the safest record, with 24 deaths or serious injuries per 100,000. Leicester City, Knowsley, Oldham and Torbay were also named among the safest areas in England.
The CSP called on local councils and the highways agency to make road safety a top priority, particularly because British Summer Time ends this weekend.
CSP Chief Executive Phil Gray said: “There is often a surge in accidents just after the clocks go back, as people adjust to driving home from work in the dark.
“We want to see a reduction in road traffic accidents. Local councils can do more to promote road safety – better lighting, traffic calming and good highway maintenance are all important in reducing the number of people injured or killed on the roads.
“Cyclists and pedestrians can also take steps to protect themselves by wearing reflective clothing so that they are more visible in poor light.”

According to 'Road Casualties Great Britain 2002 Annual Report', 3,431 people were killed on Britain's roads in 2002, and the number of people seriously injured fell to 35,976 – 3% lower than in 2001.

Seven holidaymakers die in motorway smash
Seven people have died and two left seriously injured after a road smash on a stretch of motorway near Manchester this morning. A minibus carrying 14 holidaymakers was involved in an accident involving three cars on the M56 motorway at around 5.45am.

Seven Arrested After Four Stabbed At Skatepark
North Wales Police have appealed for witnesses to a disturbance at a skate park in Wrexham last Friday. Police have arrested six adults and one youth in connection with the disturbance, during which four people suffered stab wounds. It is understood that no one was seriously injured.
