Man dies following police chase

One man has been killed and another critically injured in a car crash, following a police pursuit, in Birmingham.

West Midlands police said that a Central Motorway Police Group patrol car had spotted two cars travelling at speed on the A41 in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The patrol car followed the cars, continuing to follow a black Nissan Primera, after the two cars separated.

The Nissan then crashed into a lamppost and a derelict shop in Great Hampton Street in Hockley, around 1:30am.

Police said that they believed that four men were in the car at the time of the accident. One man was pronounced dead at the scene and a post-mortem is due to take place shortly.

A second man was taken to hospital, suffering from serious chest and pelvic injuries, and is described as being in a critical condition, while a third man suffered minor injuries.

It is thought that the driver of the Nissan left the scene.

The road was closed in both directions until around 8am on Tuesday morning, while accident reconstruction offers and forensic officers examined the scene.

The West Midlands professional standards department has been informed as a matter of routine.

The crash has also been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
