Police make fresh appeal over toddler abduction

Police investigating the alleged kidnap and rape of a three-year-old girl have issued a fresh appeal for information.

South Wales Police said that they believed two men, driving a dark blue Ford Escort, might have tried to entice young girls into their car in the Rumney area of Cardiff on January 2.

They are requesting anyone who saw the vehicle between the hours of 5am and 11pm in the area and anyone who spoke with the men or was invited to get into the car to contact them.

Police have been granted more time to continue questioning three men, aged 26, 34 and 47, in connection with the abduction of the toddler.

The toddler is believed to have been taken from her home in Rumney on Tuesday evening. She was found in car, which crashed on the M4 between Marlborough and Hungerford, following a police chase.

Officers had begun to pursue the grey Ford Escort after it was spotted travelling with no headlights on and ran through a red light early on Wednesday morning.

The child was treated in hospital for injuries, which police described as "significant", but was later released from hospital.

The 26-year-old man was arrested at the scene of the crash and the two other men were arrested later that day in Cardiff.

Earlier today, police confirmed that forensic officers were examining a property in Caerleon Road, Newport, as part of the investigation.

Superintendent Josh Jones, deputy divisional commander for Cardiff said: "I recognise that this information will be a cause for concern among the residents of Rumney and the wider Cardiff community.

"However, I must emphasise that we have recovered a car and we have three people in custody in respect of the kidnap and rape investigation - we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to this matter. Incidents like this are extremely rare and we will continue to provide a highly visible police presence in the area."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the incident room on: 02920 222111 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
