George Michael arrested on drugs offences

Singer George Michael has been arrested on suspicion of possessing drugs, it has been reported.

The 42-year-old is understood to have been arrested after he was found slumped at the wheel of a car in central London in the early hours of Saturday morning.

According to reports, the star was arrested on suspicion of possessing Class C drugs.

An ambulance was also sent to the scene, but Michael was not taken to hospital.

Police have not formally confirmed that the man arrested was Michael, whose real name is Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou.

Police said that a 42-year-old man was arrested after a member of the public reported seeing a man slumped over the wheel of a car near Hyde Park Corner. Police said that he was arrested on suspicion of possessing controlled substances, as well as on suspicion of being unfit to drive. However, he was de-arrested for the latter offence after a doctor at the police station examined him.

Police said that he had been released on bail to return to a police station at the end of next month.

Michael shot to fame in the early Eighties as a member of Wham! alongside Andrew Ridgeley. The duo had a number of hits, including 'Wake Me Up Before You Go Go', 'Freedom' and 'The Edge of Heaven' before they split up in 1986.

In 1988, Michael released his first solo album, 'Faith', which became a massive hit both in the UK and the US. However, a legal dispute with his record company Sony prevented the star from making any new music for a long period in the Nineties.

Michael has currently sold over 85 million records worldwide.
