Three in court over £53 million robbery

Three people have appeared in court charged in connection with last week's £53 million robbery at the Securitas depot in Tonbridge, Kent.

John Fowler, a 57-year-old car dealer from Elderden Farm, Staplehurst, was charged with conspiracy to rob, handling stolen goods and kidnapping depot manager Colin Dixon, his wife Lynn and son Craig.

Stuart Royle, a fellow car salesman, 47, of no fixed abode, was also charged with conspiracy to rob, while Kim Shackleton, 39, a hairdresser from Maidstone was charged with handling stolen goods.

All three were remanded in custody until March 13.

They are the first people to be charged in connection with last week's robbery, the largest ever cash robbery in Britain.

An armed gang kidnapped Mr Dixon and his family before they robbed the depot last Wednesday.

Police revealed that a 14th person has also been arrested in connection with the robbery. The man was arrested in Crowborough, East Sussex, on suspicion of conspiracy to rob.

Police have also been granted an extension to continue questioning two other men in connection with the robbery until 9pm tonight.
