Camelot fined for online subscriptions problems

UK lottery operator Camelot has been fined £90,000 following problems with its online subscriptions system.

Two fines were imposed on Camelot over problems with the implementation of its online subscription system in September and October 2004. The subscription service allows players to set up Direct Debits in order to be automatically entered into draws.

An inquiry by the National Lottery Commission found a number of faults relating to incorrect charging and crediting of some players' accounts, as well as failed and duplicate entries.

The lottery operator was fined £75,000 for failing to operate an adequate system of internal control in the implementation and initial operation of the subscriptions system. The company was also fined an additional £15,000 for failing to report some incidents to the NLC immediately.

Camelot has paid the fine in full, from revenues that the operator returns to shareholders.

Annette Lovell, Deputy Chief Executive of the National Lottery Commission, said: "While we welcome attempts by the operator to offer new ways of participating in the National Lottery, we will continue to ensure that the interests of players are protected.

"We are satisfied that the issues which arose in September and October 2004 have now been dealt with, but we will continue to monitor the operation of the subscriptions service."
