Government publishes ASBO figures

The number of anti-social behaviour orders (ASBOs) issued in England and Wales since they were introduced in 1999 has reached 7,356, according to the latest government figures.

In the third quarter last year, 816 ASBOs were handed out in order to combat anti-social behaviour and minor crime. This represented a fall of 14% on the previous quarter, but an increase of 54% on the same period in 2004.

Of those ASBOs issued, 55% were given to adults, while juveniles received 43%.

Commenting on the figures, Home Office Minister Hazel Blears said: "Anti-social behaviour can be a harrowing experience that no-one should have to endure. Today's statistics show that local authorities, the police and the courts are not hesitating to use ASBOs to clamp down on the problem.

"I am extremely encouraged that they continue to be used. Over the past twelve months, we have seen enthusiastic take-up of ASBOs, which sends out a clear message to those people who persist in this behaviour that action will be taken against them."

However, Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesperson Nick Clegg said: "These figures hide the fact that in many cases ASBOs are breached, raising questions about their use as a one-size fits all solution.

"Liberal Democrat run councils have been pioneering new and innovative approaches to the problem, such as Acceptable Behaviour Contracts, which unlike many of Labour’s solutions actually deal with the concerns of local communities."
