Report finds support for annual immigration limit
Three-quarters of the British public support the introduction of an annual immigration limit, according to a poll by campaign group Migrationwatch UK.
The survey, conducted by YouGov, found that 76% of respondents questioned supported an annual limit on the number of immigrants allowed to come to Britain.
The poll also found that 73% of those surveyed believed that Britain was becoming "increasingly segregated", while 69% said that they were concerned that Britain was losing its own culture.
Sixty-nine per cent also said that Britain was already overcrowded.
The Home Office said that migrant workers contributed to the economy in UK. A spokesperson said that migrants generated 10% of UK GDP, although they only represented 8% of the UK population.
However, the Migrationwatch survey found that 71% of those surveyed felt that getting British people back to work should take priority over more immigration.
Sir Andrew Green, chairman of Migrationwatch, said: "These are very high numbers and the results are similar across all social classes. It is difficult to see how the government's handling of this issue could be more thoroughly rejected by the British people.
"The survey shows that they fundamentally disagree with the government's open-ended immigration policy and feel that their views are being ignored in the process."
