Former boxer jailed over car crash

Former world boxing champion Naseem Hamed has been jailed for 15 months for dangerous driving, following a crash which left a man seriously injured.

Hamed, 32, from Dore in Sheffield was also banned from driving for four years.

The crash happened on the Ringinglow Road in Sheffield in May last year and involved Hamed's Mercedes McLaren sports car and two other cars.

The driver of one of the cars, Antony Burgin, suffered fractures to every major bone in his body as a result of the crash, the jury was told.

A devout Muslim, Hamed rose to prominence in the boxing world in the 1990s, winning the world featherweight title in 1995. He remained unbeaten until 2001, when he lost to Mexico's Marco Antonio Barrera.

Hamed was awarded an MBE in 1999.
