Birmingham airport closed by emergency landing

Two crew onboard a stricken A TNT Boeing 737-300 have escaped injury after a problem with the aircraft's undercarriage forced the lane to make an emergency landing.

However, the aircraft crash-landed, tipping over onto one wing, blocking the runway at Birmingham International Airport.

The cargo aircraft, en route from Liege in Belgium to Stansted in London, had earlier been diverted to Nottingham due to poor visibility.

However, when the pilots identified a problem with the aircraft's undercarriage, the flight was diverted to Birmingham and an emergency was declared.

At a few minutes past 6am this morning the aircraft was landed at Birmingham on a carpet of fire-retardant foam that had been spread on the runway as a precaution.

Airport authorities are making alternative arrangements and passengers due to fly from Birmingham International are being transferred to other airports for their flights.

Passengers are being warned to expect "substantial" delays.

A section of the runway has been opened for use by small aircraft, but larger passenger and freight planes will be unable to use the runway until the wreckage of the plane is removed following an on-site examination of the scene by Air Accident Investigation Board inspectors.

TNT Express have declared that the aircraft was in full compliance with all airworthiness regulations.
