Life sentence for banned driver over girlfriend's death

A banned driver who failed to call an ambulance when his girlfriend was fatally injured in a car accident has been jailed for life.

Andrew Bennett, 19, was driving the Subaru Impreza car when it crashed on outskirts of Sheffield in April.

His girlfriend, 17-year-old Kirsty Cash was thrown through the windshield of the car.

Sheffield Crown Court heard how Mr Bennett did not call an ambulance until 45 minutes after the crash, taking her to his home instead of the hospital.

The court was told that Miss Cash may have survived the crash if she had received treatment earlier.

Bennett, now 20, pleaded guilty to manslaughter, as well as perverting the course of justice and driving while disqualified.

He received an indeterminate life sentence and will have to serve a minimum of four-and-a-half years before he can be considered for parole.

He was also disqualified from driving for a further ten years.

His mother, Linda Bennett, 48, her partner Robin Scholes, 39, and a friend Steven Scott, 19, all pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

All were sentenced to six months in custody.
