Sikh boy's hair cut in attack

Police in Edinburgh have launched an investigation after a Sikh youth was assaulted and had his hair cut during an attack on Tuesday.

The incident happened as the 15-year-old walked through Pilrig Park around 7:30pm on Tuesday night.

Lothian and Borders Police said that the teenager passed by a group of white youths outside the Pilrig Primary School, who subjected him to racial abuse before approaching him and violently assaulting him.

The teenager was punched and kicked to the ground in what was described as a "sustained and vicious" attack, during which his headwear came loose. The gang then cut his hair - an act seen as deeply offensive by Sikhs - before fleeing the scene.

Police said that the teenager was left "terrified" by the assault, but did not need medical treatment.

The four suspects are described as white and all aged around 16.

A police spokesperson said: "This was an extremely distressing attack on a young member of our community, who has been left traumatised by this incident.

"We would appeal to anyone who was in Pilrig Park last night and may have seen the incident to contact police. We would also appeal to anyone who recognises the description of the suspects, to come forward."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Lothian and Borders Police on: 0131 311 3131.
