Investigation launched into death of stray dog

An investigation has been launched after a greyhound died in a Scottish police station after being left in a kennel for ten days.

The dog was picked up as a stray and taken to Dalkeith Police Station in Midlothian on January 2.

The dog was placed in a holding kennel after the details were logged at the front desk.

However, it is thought that the police officer who logged the details was not normally based at the station and failed to pass on the information.

According to reports, the details were not passed on to the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, as per normal procedure.

Officers at the station first became aware that something was wrong when an unpleasant smell was noticed around the kennels. The body of the dog was discovered on January 12. It is thought that the animal died of dehydration.

The Greyhound Awareness League said that greyhounds very seldom bark so it would likely have endured an agonising death in silence.

Lothian and Borders Police said that an investigation had been launched into the "tragic situation" and that the incident was being treated "very seriously".

The matter has also been reported to the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, who will also hold a separate independent inquiry.
