Searches ongoing in Birmingham 'beheading' plot
Searches of premises in Birmingham have continued overnight as inquiries continue into an alleged kidnapping plot.
Nine men are being questioned over what is claimed to be a plan to abduct a Muslim soldier, carry out a showtrial and a beheading to be posted on the internet.
It is believed that a British serviceman, a Muslim, was to be targeted in the attack. The man, who has not been identified for security reasons, is understood to be on leave in the UK after a tour of duty in Afghanistan.
Under 300 serving personnel in the armed forced are understood to be practising Muslims and the alleged plot has caused grave concern that Muslims will be discouraged from joining British armed forces.
Police are continuing with a search of houses and commercial properties at several locations in Birmingham.
All nine of those detained are being held under the Terrorism Act, which means that they can be held for 28 days.
