More properties searched in kidnap plot investigation

Police investigating an alleged plot to kidnap and murder a British Muslim soldier have secured warrants to search another three properties in Birmingham.

Assistant Chief Constable David Shaw said that officers had now completed searches at six properties, while searches continued at another nine addresses.

ACC Shaw said that a "significant number" of exhibits had been recovered during the searches, but did not reveal any other details.

He also said that officers were due to begin questioning nine men arrested in connection with the alleged plot.

Earlier, Muslim leaders appealed for calm in the Islamic community in Birmingham following the arrests.

Nine men were arrested on Wednesday in a series of raids connected with the alleged plot.

Eight men were arrested under the Terrorism Act following a series of raids in the Sparkhill, Alum Rock, Kingstanding and Edgbaston areas of the city early on Wednesday.

A ninth man was arrested on a motorway near the city later that day.

Police have been granted a further seven days to continue questioning the men.

Under new laws, police can apply for a maximum series of extensions up to 28 days.

More than 3,000 people attended prayers at the Birmingham Central Mosque at lunchtime on Friday.

Dr Mohammed Naseem, chairman of the mosque, said: "Anger is a weakness we are commanded to control; that's the Koran.

"We must always stick to the best of behaviour - it's not the time to panic or get angry."
