Newspaper apologises over Prince's girlfriend photograph

The 'Daily Mirror' has apologised for publishing a photograph of Prince William's girlfriend Kate Middleton, after she lodged a formal harassment complaint against them.

The 25-year-old contacted the Press Complaints Commission following the publication of a photograph in Thursday's edition of the paper, which showed her walking to work, carrying a coffee cup and keys.

Richard Wallace, editor of the 'Daily Mirror', issued a statement which said: "The Daily Mirror has always steered a sensible course in the use of photographs of Kate Middleton and other public figures.

"On Thursday we published an innocuous picture of Miss Middleton walking down the street with a cup of coffee.

"It was taken by a freelance photographer in circumstances where we were later told she felt harassed."

Ms Middleton's lawyers contacted newspaper editors in 2005 requesting them to leave her and her family alone, claiming that photographers had been following her almost constantly since university.

News International - which publishes 'The Sun', 'News of the World', 'The Times' and 'The Sunday Times' - introduced a self-imposed ban on using paparazzi pictures of Miss Middleton.
