Volunteer worker killed in Borneo road crash

A volunteer project manager with youth charity Raleigh International has been killed in a road accident in Borneo.

Toby Eaton-Baudains, 29, from Barlow in Derbyshire, died in the accident on Monday, which occurred while he was travelling with a group from Sepilok orangutan sanctuary to the project site at Batu Puteh.

The accident happened when the driver of the van in which the group of ten was travelling hit a lorry parked at the side of the road.

Two other passengers in the van - Yi Ling Siaw, 20, and Matthew Fernandez, 19 - were injured in the crash and are currently being treated in hospital in Kuala Lumpur.

The other passengers are now in a hotel in Kota Kinabalu, where Raleigh International said that they would be offered counselling and the opportunity to return to the UK if they wished.

The Malaysian authorities are investigating the incident. Raleigh International said that it was co-operating with the police investigation, as well as carrying out its own inquiries.

Raleigh International extended its deepest sympathies to Toby's family and friends at this time.

Stacey Adams, chief executive officer at Raleigh International, said: "Toby was a really enthusiastic and dynamic person and he brought lots of skills to his project manager role. It is incredibly sad that Toby lost his life. We will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident."

Raleigh International runs 10 overseas programmes per year, involving between 70 and 120 young people per year, in countries such as Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Malaysia and Namibia.
