Parents believe Madeleine 'safe'

The parents of Madeleine McCann, the three-year old girl who disappeared while on holiday in the Algarve, have made a statement in which they said they are focusing on the hope that their daughter is alive.

Gerry McCann and his wife Kate said that had taken comfort from the "warmth and spiritual outpouring" from around the world.

He said: "Until we have concrete evidence to the contrary, we believe Madeleine is safe and being looked after."

The family have brought in lawyers to help decide how to best use the offers of financial support to help with the search for their daughter. Mr McCann said: "This has allowed us to concentrate on our own physical wellbeing and that of our family."

Police have no firm leads in he case, despite pledges of over £2.5 million in rewards.

Police have questioned 10 British people to clarify their statements.

A form of mock trial is due to be held this week to record witness statements as evidence against any future defendant.

Meanwhile a close relative of the girl has pointed out a distinguishing feature of Madeleine's right eye, which has a pupil that extends into the iris.

The picture has been circulated in a poster with the banner 'Look into my eyes!' that is being distributed with the Crimestoppers telephone number.
