Madeleine's parents meet with the Pope

The parents of missing British girl Madeleine McCann have attended an audience with Pope Benedict XVI in Rome today.

Gerry and Kate McCann's visit is part of a series of trips to highlight the case, which will include trips to Spain, the Netherlands, Morocco and Germany.

Mr and Mrs McCann, who are both devout Catholics, talked with the pontiff on the steps of St Peter's Square and he blessed a photograph of Madeleine.

Speaking to reporters afterwards, Mr McCann said: "It was more personal than I could ever imagine it would be.

"His touch, words and thoughts were more tender than I could have imagined."

The couple's visit to Rome comes a day after video footage of their daughter, taken at the airport as the family headed off on holiday, was issued.

The video footage, which was taken on a mobile phone, show the four-year-old dressed in pink and carrying a Barbie rucksack, walking up to an aircraft at East Midlands airport.

There is also footage showing the child sitting on an airport shuttle bus at Faro airport in the Algarve.

Madeleine had travelled to the Mark Warner Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz in Portugal on April 28 with her friends, Gerry and Kate McCann, her two-year-old twin siblings Sean and Amelie and a group of friends.

She disappeared from the family's holiday apartment on May 3.
