Search for hit-and-run driver following girl's death

Police in Edinburgh are searching for a motorist, after a young girl died and her mother was injured in a hit-and-run incident.

The incident happened on Redford Drive, near to the junction with Westgarth Avenue, just before 3:30pm on Wednesday afternoon.

Four-year-old Olivia Donachie, who lives on Redford Drive, was struck by a 4x4 vehicle and died at the scene, while her mother Rachel, 33, was seriously injured and was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

It is believed that the vehicle involved in the incident was involved in two collisions minutes before the incident.

The first collision was in Lanark Road at the Gillespie Crossroads. No-one was injured.

The second collision involved three vehicles in Bridge Road in nearby Colinton Village and two women suffered minor injuries.

A 28-year-old man who was questioned in relation to the incident has now been released pending further inquiries.

Police are now searching for another man who fled the scene.

Chief Inspector Paul Bullen, of Lothian and Borders Police, appealed for information, especially from bus passengers. He said: "We know that when the fatal crash happened there were two Lothian Transport buses, Nos 10 and 16, nearby and we would like to hear from anyone on them who may have seen what happened or have any information about the incident.

"When the collision happened at Gillespie Crossroads there was a No. 45 bus nearby and those passengers should come forward.

"We would also like to hear from anyone who may have seen the fatal crash yesterday afternoon or saw a green Cherokee jeep driving erratically and has any information about what happened."

Northumbria Police Renew Rape Investigation Appeal

Man Still Questioned Over Heathrow Alert
Police are continuing to question a man who sparked a major security alert at Heathrow airport on Thursday by running onto a runway. The man was arrested as he ran onto the north runway, carrying a rucksack around 2:30pm on Thursday. Armed police detained him and a controlled explosion was carried out on his bag. However, no explosives were found.

They said that at approximately 1.30am on Sunday 7 October 2001, 18-year-old Tyrone Rowe was shot dead in Caradon Way, Tottenham. Brighton Bus Crash Is 'Major Incident'
Five people have been seriously injured after two buses collided in central Brighton. The accident happened shortly after 9.20am on Monday (6 July) at Queen's Road, near the Clock Tower in the town. Emergency services are at the scene and have described it as a "major incident".
