Ex-newspaper editor to be Tory press chief

Andy Coulson, the former editor of the 'News of the World' is to become the new director of communications for the Conservative party.

Mr Coulson resigned as editor of the tabloid in January after the paper's royal reporter Clive Goodman was jailed for intercepting phone messages from a number of celebrities, including members of the Royal Family.

Mr Coulson was cleared of any involvement in the scandal by the Press Complaints Commission.

Commenting on the appointment, Mr Coulson said that he was "delighted" to be joining Conservative leader David Cameron's team, while Mr Cameron said that Mr Coulson would make a "formidable contribution" as a senior member of his team, building the strategy for the next general election.
