Trapped man dies in drain

A man who become trapped in a flooded drain in Hull has died, despite attempts by emergency services to rescue him.

The man, believed to be in his mid-twenties, became trapped as he tried to fix a drain near a fish farm in the Hessle area of Hull.

Firefighters and police divers had tried to keep the man's head above water as they tried to rescue him.

It is thought that the man had trapped his foot, making it difficult to free him, and the rescue attempt was further hampered by the continuing rainfall.

Meanwhile, officials in Hull have declared a state of emergency following torrential rain in the area.

More than 70 schools have been closed, as well as the city's cemeteries and crematorium, because of flooding.

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said that firefighters had received more than 300 calls in just three hours.

People have been advised not to travel unless it is absolutely essential and a health warning has been issued amid reports that sewage has been flowing into some homes.

Severe weather has been affecting many parts of England and Wales, with Yorkshire and Lincolnshire the worst hit areas.
