Coastguard calls off search for missing woman

Coastguard have called off an air and sea search for a missing 20-year-old woman who disappeared following a boating accident.

The search was launched after an empty rigid inflatable boat (RIB) came ashore close to Bembridge Point on the Isle of Wight.

The 19ft orange vessel had become ensnared on a lobster pot buoy line

A 28-year-old man was rescued from the water about half a mile away at Whitecliff Bay and was airlifted to hospital, but he was pronounced dead there.

It emerged that the RIB belonged to a man who was a friend of a West Midlands family who were on the Isle of Wight for a holiday.

The family included a married couple in their forties, their 20-year-old daughter and her boyfriend.

The dead man has yet to be identified.

The Marine Accident Investigation Board is to begin its own inquiry into the incident.
